“And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.”Genesis 2:3 (KJV)
Born at creation
The Sabbath is older than any nation or church. At the end of creation week, “God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work” (Genesis 2:3). Before there was sin, there was Sabbath, a gift for all humanity. Jesus said, “The sabbath was made for man” (Mark 2:27).
Which day is it?
The fourth commandment is specific: “the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God” (Exodus 20:10). The Bible counts days from evening to evening (Genesis 1:5; Leviticus 23:32), so the Sabbath runs from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset. In the Gospels, Jesus attended worship “as his custom was… on the sabbath day” (Luke 4:16), and the apostles continued to meet and teach on the Sabbath (Acts 13:42–44; 17:2).
Many people are surprised to learn this. In our study we look at every Sabbath text together and let the Bible speak for itself.
A day of rest, worship and freedom
The Sabbath is a memorial of creation (Exodus 20:11) and a sign of the God who makes us holy (Ezekiel 20:12). It's a day to set aside ordinary work and business, to worship, rest, enjoy nature, visit the sick and spend time with family. Isaiah calls it “a delight” (Isaiah 58:13).
Kept this way, the Sabbath can become the best day of the week: unplugged, unhurried, and centred on what matters most.
Preparing for the Sabbath
The Bible speaks of a day of preparation (Exodus 16:23; Luke 23:54). Getting the shopping, cleaning and cooking done on Friday frees the Sabbath hours for rest. Small habits, like lighting a candle at sunset or a family walk, help make it special.
The Sabbath forever
The Sabbath isn't only in the past. Isaiah foresees God's people worshipping “from one sabbath to another” in the new earth (Isaiah 66:22–23). It's a weekly taste of eternity.
Questions for reflection
- Why do you think God placed the Sabbath at the very end of creation week?
- What does Luke 4:16 tell us about Jesus' Sabbath habit?
- Why does the fourth commandment begin with the word “Remember”?
- What would a Sabbath “delight” (Isaiah 58:13–14) look like in your home?
